Mechanical and Electrical Design Services
We provide M&E design services for End User Clients, Main Contractors and M&E Sub-Contractors. Our scope extends from Feasibility through to the production of detailed coordinated working drawings and as-installed drawings.
Our team of high experienced engineers and technicians supported by the latest hardware and software operate across the full range of M&E services and building sector types including Education, Healthcare, Offices, Industrial and large-scale residential with project values of up to £60M.
Whilst we still work in 2D where clients require it we have fully embedded BIM into our works processes and utilise it to enhance the design process both internally and with other design team members. We have extensive experience of working in a BIM Level 2 environment and are fully conversant with all the major CDEs including 4 Projects, Aconex etc. and with COBIE schedule linking and embedding.
We have significant experience of low energy & carbon impact design with multiple projects achieving BREEAM Excellent, Passivhaus and WELL Platinum. To support our designs we can provide a wide range of Thermal Modelling and Sustainability advice operating the IES Virtual Environment Building Simulation software. All technical modelling and reporting is produced in house by our Chartered Engineers with CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor certification.
Draughting and Coordination
We combine M&E Modelling/drawing expertise and real construction experience to enable the production of fully coordinated and spatially accurate 2D and 3D M&E services drawings and models. Drawings are produced in the industry standard Autodesk AEC Collection (including Revit, Navisworks, & AutoCAD) utilising inputs varying from outline design 3D models to red-pen 2D mark-ups.

BIM Level 2
We have extensive experience of working in a BIM Level 2 environment on projects up to £60M in value. We are fully conversant with all the major CDEs including 4 Projects, Aconex etc) and with COBIE schedule linking and embedding.
We have extensive experience is producing 3D coordinated services models and drawings working on our own design and also those of other consultants. Clash detection is undertaken as the model progresses both between the services themselves and between the services and the building fabric. Clashes are resolved by re-routing and local re-sizing of elements where possible or through review with the Designers where necessary.
The advantages of the 3D approach include:-
- Full 3D Visualisation of the proposed MEP installation allowing demonstration of the design intent to non-technical stakeholders - this can include video "walk-throughs"
- Clashes resolved as the model progresses avoiding the need for remedial works and possible delays to site processes
- Real time coordination/clash detection can be undertaken to assess the impact of late changes to services and the building fabric
- Accurate drawings incorporating the coordination can be prepared direct from the model - this can include sectionss, and elevations at any point as required to aid buildability
Where required we produce fully co-ordinated 2D working drawings for MEP services. Drawings are produced in the industry standard Autodesk AutoCAD software package utilising inputs varying from outline design 2D drawings to red-pen 2D mark-ups.
As the various services are detailed clash detection is undertaken manually to assess clashes between the services themselves and the building fabric. Clashes are resolved by re-routing and local re-sizing of elements as part of the detailing or referred to the designers for advice as necessary.
All drawings produced are double line type, fully dimensioned and c/w invert levels. Full consideration is given to pipe falls, spacing between services, supports and accessibility for maintenance. Detailed 1:20 drawings including section/elevations are provided for all pinch points and all plant areas.
Sustainable and Low Energy Design
We provide a wide range of Thermal Modelling and Sustainability advice services for Direct Clients, Main Contractors and MEP Sub-Contractors.
We operate the IES Virtual Environment Building Simulation software which enables highly detailed 3D models of a proposed building to be built and then subjected to a simulation of the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, wind and sun) it may encounter throughout a year. All technical modelling and reporting is produced by Chartered Engineers with CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor certification.
The results of thermal modelling can be utilised for:-
Part L Reports and EPCs
We can assess the compliance of a building and its installed services with Building Regulations Part L. Following on from we can produce the BRUKL document for Building Control approval and the Energy Performance certificate on completion.
The relative comfort conditions of different design solution can be assessed against TM52 and TM59 for overheating in naturally ventilated businesses and dwellings, and PPD and PMV analysis for BREEAM Hea 04 compliance.
Daylighting and Artificial Lighting
The 3D model incorporates the facility for the production of fully rendered internal and external views of the building to assess the effects of daylight and artificial lighting. This is supplemented by detailed lighting designs and simulations using the Relux Desktop Suite of programmes.
MEP Solution Optimisation
A comparison of the relative energy consumption and comfort assessments from the model with an assessment of installation costs and buildability provides all the data required to optimise the building services solution chosen. This facility is particularly useful when considering natural ventilation or hybrid ventilation strategies.
Energy/CO2 Conservation and Sustainability Advice
Conservation and Sustainability Advice services are undertaken by our CIBSE Registered Low Carbon Energy Assessors and Chartered Engineers. This advice covers the full range of applications from simple upgrading of building fabric elements to complex renewable energy sources. The Dynamic Simulation Modelling [DSM] software allows AVUS to advise actual energy saving for any proposed energy conservation measure.
